10.7.24

This week we will be looking at the majesty - or the power of our God from Psalm 33.6-20. The past couple of weeks have demonstrated for us in very tangible ways the incredible power of nature and what kind of destruction it can produce. But all that power of nature combined is a drop in the bucket compared to the power of God.

The Psalmist tells us that he gathers the oceans in jars and holds them on his kitchen counter. He made the starry host with his mere breath. When God desires something to “be”, all he has to do it “think” it and it is! The power of our God is far beyond our wildest comprehension. And to even contemplate it simply blows us away! And unless we can grasp the full measure of his power, we will tend to either give too much or too little power to other things.

This passage reminds us that there is a power and majesty that belongs to God - and to God alone. His power is inescapable. He merely spoke and it came to be! Nothing happens that hasn’t flowed from the firm plans of God. The very definition of power means the ability to bring your intentions to reality. And this is where we begin the see the limited scope of the power that we have as compared to God. We have the power to accomplish many things. But the distance between our desires and the reality it produces is staggering. We make many plans - we have many desires - but we’re not always able to pull them off. And of course, the smaller the disparity between our desires and our ability to pull it off, the more power we actually have.

With God, there is zero disparity between his desires and his ability. None. He is the one and only being would can want or desire something, and it is. The desires of God are his actions - every time. He speaks - he even thinks - and it is. As the Psalmist says elsewhere, “Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.” (115.3)

Because of that great power, the Psalmist tells us that “his plans stand firm” (11). And as a result, he foils the plans of the nations and its people” (10). This means that there is NOTHING that happens in this world that is not under his direct control. No matter how much we make freak out at circumstances that seem overwhelming, God is not intimidated or unaware. But he lovingly holds them in his hands to bring about our good.

Whatever struggles or obstacles that you are facing today, remember that you have a God THIS powerful who is your heavenly Father. And he promises to use every bit of that power to provide what you need. He is not weak. And he is not uncaring. Give your desires and longings to him today, and ask him “to do far more than you could ever ask or imagine.”
