Psalm 24
[One:] The earth is the LORD’S and the fullness thereof,
the world and those who dwell therein,
[All:] for he has founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.
Who shall ascend the hill of the LORD?
And who shall stand in his holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
who does not lift up his soul to what is false
and does not swear deceitfully.
He will receive blessing from the LORD
and righteousness from the God of his salvation.
Such is the generation of those who seek him,
who seek the face of the God of Jacob.
Lift up your heads, O gates!
And be lifted up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The LORD, strong and mighty,
the LORD, mighty in battle!
Lift up your heads, O gates!
And lift them up, O ancient doors,
that the King of glory may come in.
Who is this King of glory?
The LORD of hosts,
he is the King of glory!
Confession of Sin
Almighty God,
you have made us for yourself,
and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.
Here in this wilderness,
in our self-inflicted exile from the Garden,
you invite us to trust you:
to look to you for safety and deliverance,
to rely on you for our daily bread,
to be satisfied in your steadfast love
and find in you rest for our souls.
Yet often we live not in trust, but from fear.
We take our lives into our own hands,
relying on ourselves instead of your grace.
We look to the world’s hollow promises
to satisfy our longing and fill our emptiness.
We chase after shadows, trying to earn and build
what can only be found in you.
We confess, merciful God:
We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart.
We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry, and we humbly repent.
Teach us instead, O gracious King,
to trust you in our weakness,
to walk in your light as we hope in your promise.
For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us,
that we may delight in your will
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your name.
Amen.
Assurance of Pardon
Hear, O child, the good news of Christ:
Give thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.
(Colossians 1:12-15, 19-20)
Though we were once alienated from God,
as strangers and enemies of his Kingdom,
Jesus has come to bring us near,
to give us an inheritance in God’s light,
making peace by his blood.
So take heart, O child, and rejoice!
Hold fast to the hope of your Savior!
In Christ we are forgiven!
Thanks be to God!

Reading of Scripture
Isaiah 2:1-5
The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.
It shall come to pass in the latter days
that the mountain of the house of the LORD
shall be established as the highest of the mountains,
and shall be lifted up above the hills;
and all the nations shall flow to it,
and many peoples shall come, and say:
“Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD,
to the house of the God of Jacob,
that he may teach us his ways
and that we may walk in his paths.”
For out of Zion shall go forth the law,
and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.
He shall judge between the nations,
and shall decide disputes for many peoples;
and they shall beat their swords into plowshares,
and their spears into pruning hooks;
nation shall not lift up sword against nation,
neither shall they learn war anymore.
O house of Jacob, come,
let us walk in the light of the LORD.
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
