Call to Worship

From Psalm 72

[One:] Give the king your justice, O God,
and your righteousness to the royal son!
May he judge your people with righteousness,
     and your poor with justice!
Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people,
     and the hills, in righteousness!
[All:] May he defend the cause of the poor of the people,
give deliverance to the children of the needy,
     and crush the oppressor!

May all kings fall down before him,
     all nations serve him!
For he delivers the needy when he calls,
the poor and him who has no helper.
He has pity on the weak and the needy,
and saves the lives of the needy.
From oppression and violence he redeems their life,
and precious is their blood in his sight.

May his name endure forever,
his fame continue as long as the sun!
May people be blessed in him,
     all nations call him blessed!

Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel,
     who alone does wondrous things.
Blessed be his glorious name forever;
may the whole earth be filled with his glory!
Amen and Amen!

Confession of Sin

Merciful God,
the risen Christ is our rightful King,
who reigns over his Kingdom forever.
Yet we confess that we do not always live
with the values of his Kingdom at heart.

You say blessed are the poor,
yet we seek comfort in things we can buy.
You say blessed are the hungry,
yet we fill ourselves up with earthly pleasures.

You say blessed are those who weep,
yet we do not mourn our sin as we ought.
You say we are blessed when we are hated,
Excluded, overlooked, and rejected,
But still we chase after the approval of others.

We confess, merciful God:
We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart.
We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry, and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us,
that we may delight in your will
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your name.
Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Hear, O child, the good news of Jesus:

Be strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

(Colossians 1:11-14)

Though we once lived in darkness,
beneath the shadow of death’s curse,
Jesus Christ went down into death
to raise us up into the light of his Kingdom.
He has forgiven the sins of our selfish hearts,
healing all our sickness and disease,
and redeems us unto our Father forever.

So take heart, O child.
Find strength and joy in the love
of your Savior and King.

Reading of Scripture

Luke 6:12-26

In these days he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles: Simon, whom he named Peter, and Andrew his brother, and James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.

And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said:

“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man! Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for so their fathers did to the prophets.

But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.
Woe to you who are full now, for you shall be hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep.
Woe to you, when all people speak well of you, for so their fathers did to the false prophets.”

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
