Call to Worship

Psalm 86:8-13

[One:] There is none like you among the gods, O Lord,
nor are there any works like yours.
[All:] All the nations you have made shall come
and worship before you, O Lord,
     and shall glorify your name.
For you are great and do wondrous things;
     you alone are God.
Teach me your way, O LORD,
     that I may walk in your truth;
unite my heart to fear your name.
I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
and I will glorify your name forever.
For great is your steadfast love toward me;
you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol.

Confession of Sin

Almighty God,
you invite us to come and draw near,
to see and behold in Christ
the wonder of your love and mercy.

But often we come with a different heart.
We come with answers instead of need,
looking to test you by our own faulty standard,
rather than subject ourselves to your gracious will.

We want you to affirm us as we are,
to tell us that we’re good enough,
justified by our works,
resisting your mercy that would change our hearts.

May we come instead with humility,
not to examine you, but to behold you,
to be examined by your perfect truth
and transformed by your abundant grace.
Search us and know us, O God.

For we confess:
We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart.
We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry, and we humbly repent.

For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us,
that we may delight in your will
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your name.
Amen.

Assurance of Pardon

Hear, O child, the good news of God:

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

(Titus 3:4–7)

When we were slaves to sin and death,
the kindness and mercy of God
appeared to us in Christ Jesus.
By the sacrifice of his blood
and the washing of his Spirit
we have been rescued, justified by his grace,
to inherit the hope of God’s eternal life.

So take heart, O child, and rest
in the security of God’s love!

In Christ we are forgiven!
Thanks be to God!

Reading of Scripture

Luke 10:25-37

And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.”

But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”

This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
